How to use the kitchen cost calculator
- Under What do you want priced?, choose Whole kitchen: supply and fit or Fitting only (you buy the kitchen).
- For a whole kitchen, pick the Quality of kitchen: budget, mid-range, or high-end or bespoke.
- Pick the Kitchen size. Count the wall and base units: small is about 6 to 8, medium about 10 to 14 and large 15 or more.
- Pick your region under Where do you live? so the price is adjusted for London, the South East, the North, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
- Read the range, the typical cost and the time to fit. Tap Add to shopping list to keep it, or Share link to send it on.
Why use this calculator
It splits the job in two. You can price a whole kitchen supplied and fitted, or just the fitter, which is handy if you are buying units from a retailer.
It shows how much of the price is the fitter's labour, and how many working days to allow, so you can see where the money goes.
It is brand-neutral. The prices come from published UK cost guides, not from a showroom wanting to book you in.
How we worked it out
Your numbers, step by step. This updates as you change the calculator.
- Using UK average prices, so no regional adjustment.
- Mid-range kitchens cost £8,000 – £14,000 supplied and fitted (units, worktop, appliances and fitting).
- A medium kitchen uses the whole range.
- After the regional adjustment: £8,000 – £14,000 (typical £11,000)
- Of that, the fitter's labour is about £1,700 – £3,000 (typical £2,500).
- Fitting takes about 4 to 10 working days.
- Total = £8,000 – £14,000 (typical £11,000)
How we estimate the cost
We use low, typical and high prices from published UK cost guides.
- Whole kitchen: the price range for your quality level, supplied and fitted. The guides give one range per quality, not one per size, so we read a small kitchen as the lower half of the range (low to typical) and a large kitchen as the upper half (typical to high). A medium kitchen uses the whole range.
- Fitting only: the fitter’s labour range, split into lower and upper halves in the same way.
- Labour inside the whole-kitchen price: shown as a guide to how much of the total is the fitter. It is already inside the price, not on top.
- Time: about 4 to 10 working days, typically 7, split by size the same way.
- Region: the price is multiplied by a regional factor. London is 1.25, the South East 1.15, the North 0.92, Scotland 0.93, Wales 0.92 and Northern Ireland 0.88. These are our own estimates, not an official index.
What’s included
Supplied and fitted, UK average, for a medium kitchen:
| Quality | Low | Typical | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget (flat-pack or basic units) | £5,000 | £6,000 | £7,000 |
| Mid-range | £8,000 | £11,000 | £14,000 |
| High-end or bespoke | £20,000 | £27,500 | £50,000 |
These cover the units, worktop, appliances and fitting. Fitting only is £1,700 to £3,000, typically £2,500, and does not include a plumber or electrician.
Not included or often extra: plumbing, electrics, flooring, plastering, removing the old kitchen, and anything your own firm adds on top. The high-end range has no real upper limit, so treat the top figure as a guide only.
What changes the price
- Quality. Flat-pack units and basic appliances cost far less than bespoke cabinets and premium worktops.
- Size. More units, more worktop and more appliances mean a bigger bill.
- Worktop and appliances. Laminate, solid wood and quartz or granite worktops are priced very differently.
- Extra trades. Plumbing, electrics, flooring and plastering are often priced separately.
- Where you live. Fitters charge more in London and the South East.
- Fitter rates. Day rates vary a lot between guides, so quotes can differ widely.
- Open-ended top end. For bespoke kitchens we found few sources, so that range is the roughest.
Tips
- Count your units before choosing a size. The number of wall and base units has a bigger effect on price than the room's floor area.
- Ask each firm exactly what is included. Plumbing, electrics, flooring, plastering and taking out the old kitchen can all be extra.
- Gas and electrical work needs a Gas Safe engineer or a registered electrician, so check who is doing what.
- Get at least three quotes, then compare them with the quote checker.
- If you are buying the kitchen yourself, price the fitting only and check what the fitter expects you to have ready on day one.
- A kitchen refit can also mean new flooring and paint. Work out those separately with the paint calculator and laminate flooring calculator.
