How to use the quote checker
- Choose the job from the list. If it is priced by the square metre, enter the size.
- Pick your region. Prices in London and the South East are higher than the UK average.
- Type in the total price on your quote.
- Read where it sits on the range bar. Then use the checklist to ask what is included.
Why use this checker
Quotes are hard to judge when you only have one. This tool shows you the usual range for the job, so you know whether to relax or to ask more questions.
It does not tell you who to hire. A quote above the usual range might cover a better finish, harder access, or extras. A quote below it might leave things out. The point is to ask the right questions.
Typical prices were last checked on 2026-11-06. We leave out any job where we only have a single price, not a range.
Tips
- Get at least three quotes for big jobs. Ask each one to price the same list of work.
- Ask for the quote in writing, split into labour, materials and extras. It is easier to compare.
- Check whether VAT is included. Some firms quote without it.
- Do not pay a large deposit upfront. Ask for payments tied to stages of the work.
- Check for insurance, and for membership of a trade body or a registered scheme where the job needs one (Gas Safe for gas, for example).
FAQs
Is my quote too high?
If it sits above the typical range, it is higher than usual. That is not the same as wrong. Ask what is included, then compare it with one or two other quotes. Access, finish and the size of the firm all move the price.
Where do the typical prices come from?
From published UK cost guides and trade bodies. We take the low, typical and high figures they publish and show them as a range.
Why is the region important?
Labour costs more in London and the South East than in the North and in Wales. We adjust the range by region. The adjustments are our estimates, not an official index.
My quote is a lot lower than typical. Should I worry?
Not always. But ask why. It might be a smaller scope, cheaper materials, or leaving out things like waste removal, making good or VAT. Get the details in writing.
Does this replace a survey or a proper quote?
No. It is a guide for comparing, based on general UK prices. Your job may differ. Always get a written, itemised quote from the people doing the work.
